4 thick slices Italian bread, French bread, or rustic loaf
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 garlic cloves, finely minced
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
