These crispy air fryer onion straws are thin, golden, and packed with crunch without deep frying. They make an easy snack, a crunchy topping for burgers and salads, or a simple side dish for sandwiches and dinners.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 10–12 minutes
Total Time: 25–27 minutes
Servings: 4
1 large sweet onion, very thinly sliced
1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk mixed with 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice or vinegar)
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
Olive oil spray
1. Slice the onion into very thin rings, then separate the rings into thin strands.
2. Place the onion strands in buttermilk and let them soak for 10 minutes.
3. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
4. Lift the onions from the buttermilk, let the excess drip off, then toss them in the flour mixture until lightly and evenly coated.
5. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
6. Lightly spray the basket with oil. Arrange the onion straws in a thin loose layer, leaving space for air to circulate.
7. Spray the tops lightly with oil and air fry for 5–6 minutes.
8. Shake or gently flip, then cook for another 4–6 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
9. Work in batches if needed. Serve right away for the best crunch.
Slice the onion as thinly as possible so the straws crisp faster and more evenly.
Cornstarch helps create a lighter, crispier coating, so do not skip it.
Do not overcrowd the basket or the onion straws will steam instead of crisp.
A very light oil spray is enough—too much oil can soften the coating.
They are best eaten fresh, right after cooking.
Add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes for a spicy version.
Use smoked paprika for a deeper savory flavor.
Sprinkle with a little grated parmesan right after cooking for a cheesy finish.
Add a pinch of dried ranch seasoning to the flour mixture for extra flavor.
